During the spring and summer months, these hills remain very much alive. Time to plan an off-piste exchange or Getaway.
Various scenic byways crisscross the Catskills, connecting charming little towns to historic covered bridges to long stretches of outdoor tranquility. The prize at the end of the Phoenicia to Woodstock trip is a milkshake at Nancy’s of Woodstock Artisanal Creamery. Take Route 30 to see the Downsville Bridge, along with a 20-mile detour south to the Livingston Manor Covered Bridge. Finally, the Shawangunk Mountains Scenic Byway traverses nature preserves and delivers you to multiple overlooks and hiking trails.

Before the 2002 Winter Olympics, Park City was probably one of the West’s best kept secrets. Afterward, the town’s popularity soared, so it makes sense to check out the Utah Olympic Park. Explore the museum, take a zip-line tour, or even test your mettle on the summertime bobsled track. For more thrills, take a ride on the 3,000-foot-long Park City Alpine Slide or climb aboard the Mountain Coaster and zoom down the hillside at about 25 miles per hour.
Park City, Utah
Today, Steamboat Springs is undoubtedly famous for its snow sports. As the community’s name suggests, however, it was a natural hot spring that originally put this mountain town on the map. And a soak at the Old Town Hot Springs remains a must-do activity, no matter the season. Steamboat’s other requisite water-based diversion — an inner-tube float through town on the Yampa River — isn’t nearly as relaxing, but the snowmelt-fed stream’s cooler temperature certainly is refreshing!
Steamboat Springs, Colorado
Active alfresco dining could be considered the official warm-weather pastime of the Austrian Alps. Sign up for a Culinary Kingtour if you’re interested in pairing a guided e-bike excursion with local specialties such as dumpling soup and cream cheese pancakes. Hikers can enjoy an energy-boosting meal at numerous trek-to huts outside of Maria Alm. And St. Johann im Pongau visitors can arrange to pick up loaded picnic baskets (through the tourist office) for a laid-back afternoon in the park.

Here’s a secret about playing golf in Colorado’s high country: The ball flies farther. In fact, according to scientists at Titleist, when you tee off in Vail, at an altitude of about 8,150 feet, the ball will carry nearly 10 percent farther than at sea level. Fortunately, there are plenty of courses throughout the valley where you can “grip it and rip it” and personally test this theory. The Vail Golf Club and EagleVail Golf Club are popular locals’ choices.
Vail, Colorado
Breckenridge’s backstory as a rugged late-1800s mining boomtown is as fascinating as the local outdoor pursuits are enjoyable. Tour the Country Boy Mine (1,000 feet into the mountain!) to learn about the region’s Gold Rush roots, and then stroll the downtown historic district, where numerous well-preserved structures from that era now house funky shops or restaurants. To sample the town’s latest gold strike — of the liquid variety — stop in at both the Breckenridge Distillery and Breckenridge Brewery.
Breckenridge, Colorado
When it comes to off-season fun and excitement, Stateline’s gaming establishments stack the odds in your favor. Try your luck at an assortment of slot machines and table games, sit down to a high roller–style surf-and-turf dinner at Harrah’s Friday’s Station, and enjoy a late-night signature cocktail at Hard Rock’s Center Bar. Beyond the casinos, you’re sure to hit the scenery jackpot during a Lake Tahoe cruise aboard the old school–cool M.S. Dixie II paddle wheeler.

The Dominican Republic consistently ranks as the most popular vacation destination in the Caribbean and it’s easy to see why: You could hole up for days surrounded by little more than idyllic sea-and-sand scenery, lying underneath palm trees that seem to touch the sky — but don’t let the sweetness of doing nothing prevent you from venturing off resort. You won’t want to miss experiencing the D.R.’s treasure trove of natural attractions and adventures. Whether you’re hiking Puerto Plata’s hills, strolling Santo Domingo’s UNESCO–ranked colonial neighborhood, dancing outdoors at a live merengue concert, or wandering the scenic coastal villages just outside Punta Cana, you’ll quickly fall for the unique vibrancy of the D.R., well beyond its beaches. Read on to discover where to go to experience some of this Caribbean nation’s cultural delights.
Indulge at your luxury resort, enjoy 800 miles of coastline, and explore the spectacular countryside. Beat the no-travel blues with an exchange or Getaway to the Dominican Republic — the Caribbean’s best medicine.

Puerto Plata province’s diverse terrain and folkloric beat was made for independent explorers. Hop in a taxi in Puerto Plata city and you’ll reach the Teleférico cable car ride to Mount Isabel de Torres in just 10 minutes. The iconic mountain landmark and national monument stands 2,600 feet above the Atlantic. Take the slow ride up and you’ll be rewarded with unforgettable panoramic ocean and mountain vistas. When you reach the top and exit the gondola, snap a selfie beside the Christ the Redeemer statue, a replica of the one in Rio de Janeiro. Back in the city, head to Parque Independencia plaza (also known as Parque Central) for ice cream and relaxation in the shade, surrounded by Victorian architecture. You could also take a sunset walk down Puerto Plata’s seafront boulevard, the Malecón. But no visit to the D.R. would be complete without a bit of baseball. The Dominican Republic Professional Baseball League hosts an annual fall and winter tournament, with local teams competing countrywide. If your visit doesn’t coincide with the games, not to worry: Soak up the pelota culture at the Bartolo Colón Stadium, located in the picturesque small town of Altamira, an hour southwest of Playa Dorada. The MLB player built the professional stadium and baseball training camp for youth in his hometown in 2012. The adjacent museum includes detailed information on baseball’s significance in Dominican culture, as well as a collection of Colón’s uniforms. Not into baseball? You can’t go wrong with chocolate. The Dominican Republic ranks among the world’s top cacao exporters, and Puerto Plata is, in great part, responsible, boasting a solid number of cacao plantation across its fertile land. Arrange a visit to Chocal, a female-run chocolate factory in the Palmar Grande community, less than an hour southwest of Puerto Plata city. Hike the estate and learn how chocolate is made. Indulge in the free tastings, and don’t forget to bring home some treats.
The Vibe: Natural diversions and baseball To Do: Take a cable car ride to Mount Isabel de Torres | Visit Bartolo Colón Stadium | Tour Chocal chocolate factory

Tucked on the southeastern shore, an approximately two-and-a-half hour drive from Punta Cana, Santo Domingo is the D.R.’s cultural pulse — a cosmopolitan city overflowing with history, music, art, and sights. Head to the Colonial City neighborhood — founded in 1498, this UNESCO World Heritage site is recognized as the first permanent European city in the Americas. Spanish colonialists used this “city of firsts” as a model for the rest of the Americas, building the first military fortress in the region, the first cathedral, the first hospital, convent, university, and paved street, Calle Las Damas. Walk down the pedestrian Calle El Conde, a lively boulevard running through the heart of the Zona Colonial, lined with shops, streetside paintings, restaurants, and entertainment. Cool off on a bench in Parque Colón, near the cathedral, and listen to merengue musicians who roam its corners and serenade the public for a few pesos. Continue on to the Museo de las Casas Reales, a former administrative office that’s been turned into a history museum, which highlights various artifacts relating to the Taíno (indigenous Caribbean) culture, from the days of slavery to the sugarcane industry. Continue on to the Alcázar de Colón museum on Plaza España, once the former palatial home of Diego Colón, son of Christopher Columbus. On weekends, catch free outdoor merengue and bachata concerts. The Ballet Folklórico’s traditional dance show takes place on Plaza España every Friday and Saturday night. And on Sunday evenings, Grupo Bonyé’s live performance on the ruins of the San Francisco Monastery is a can’t-be-missed Santo Domingo tradition.
The Vibe: History lessons and live music To Do: Explore Colonial City | Stroll Calle El Conde | Check out a merengue show
When you’re ready to explore outside of Punta Cana, head to the surrounding beach towns north and south of the area, for a variety of coastline views and cultural vibes. Just a 20-minute drive north of Bávaro, Playa Macao consistently ranks as one of the top 10 beaches in the D.R. This golden stretch is a surfer’s haven, with 2 miles of golden sand, surf schools, and seafood shacks. Enjoy a beachfront lobster lunch, take a surf lesson, or just tumble in the waves. Continue an hour north of Playa Macao, along the newly paved highway that links Punta Cana and the pictorial fishing community of Michès. You’ll be spoiled with sights of rolling hills and a path leading toward undeveloped beaches. Signs off the highway point to Playa Michès, popular with locals, and Playa Esmeralda, a breathtaking strand reached after a bumpy 30-minute off-road drive. You could also head to the popular Montaña Redonda attraction, where you’ll be driven by all-terrain trucks to approximately 1,000 feet above sea level on a snaky road to the summit for spectacular bird’s-eye views over the Redonda lagoon. Expect Instagram-worthy photos thanks to strategically placed swings. For history, caving, and a mix of beach and offshore island scenery, head 40 minutes southwest of Punta Cana, stopping at the Casa Ponce de León museum in San Rafael de Yuma. Tour the explorer’s former dwelling where he lived before he set out in 1513 to conquer Puerto Rico. Continue 15 minutes southeast and you’ll land in Boca de Yuma, a fishing parish and tourism hub once home to the native Taíno Indians and pirates. The hamlet itself is the entrance to Cueva de Berna, one of the largest underground chambers in the country and part of the Cotubanamá National Park. Hike this dry cave to see petroglyphs dating thousands of years. Back in town, stroll the waterfront or take a boat ride along the Yuma River.
The Vibe: Charming fishing villages, caves, and offshore islands To Do: Hit the (many) beaches | Go swinging at Montaña Redonda | Explore Cueva de Berna

Branson keeps upping its entertainment game. Music and magic feature in two recent additions. Don’t miss Dean Z’s high-energy performance paying tribute to the King of Rock ’n’ Roll’s entire career — from the 1950s songs that made him a legend to his 1970s shows in that other entertainment capital, Las Vegas. Also worth checking out: Garry and Janine Carson’s magic show, which weaves in some humor and audience participation.
In the grand tradition of cheese trails, wine trails, and whiskey trails, Daytona has launched the Motorsports Trail, which will take you through the city’s deep-rooted car racing history. Highlights include the Living Legends of Auto Racing Museum and the Halifax Historical Museum’s permanent exhibit, The Racing Zone; as well as the classic beach racecourse and, of course, the Daytona International Speedway itself. Racing-relevant roadside restaurants are peppered along the trail, too — perfect for pit stops en route.
What better way to mark the spring and first few weeks of summer than by celebrating the seasons’ colorful flora? Every year, EPCOT does just that. Expect global gardens abloom with exotic flowers, topiary sculptures resembling beloved Disney characters, 15 outdoor kitchens, and a rotating musical line-up at the America Gardens Theater — not to mention a kaleidoscope of butterflies at the Goodness Garden Butterfly House.
In true Disney-style, this one’s going to be big — and last a long time. Indeed, when all is said and done, the 18-month-long 50th-anniversary celebration will take us into 2023. Mickey and Minnie will be getting a sparkling makeover, dazzling lights will illuminate the park’s core attractions, and a new word — EARidescence — has been coined to describe the fun-filled festivities. You do not want to miss this magical party.
